Your questions, our community

Whether you're a seasoned worldbuilder or just starting out, this community is for you. I believe that the best worlds are built collaboratively, through shared knowledge and diverse perspectives. Here are some common topics and questions I cover, but feel free to dive in with your own.

How do I start building a new world?

Starting a new world can be overwhelming! I recommend beginning with a core concept or a single compelling idea, then gradually expanding outwards. Consider your world's history, geography, cultures, and magic systems. Don't be afraid to brainstorm and let your creativity flow!

What makes a world feel real?

That feeling of getting lost in a world often comes from internal consistency and attention to detail. A real-feeling world has logical consequences, believable characters, and a history that impacts its present. Engaging all five senses in your descriptions can also make a big difference.

How can I develop unique cultures?

Drawing inspiration from real-world cultures is a great start, but remember to twist and combine elements to create something new. Consider their values, traditions, social structures, and how their environment shapes their way of life.

Where can I find inspiration for my world?

Inspiration is everywhere! Look to history, mythology, nature, science, art, and even your dreams. Reading diverse genres and exploring different mediums can also spark new ideas for your world.

What tools do you recommend for worldbuilding?

Many tools can help! From simple notebooks and pens to digital software like Campfire Technology or World Anvil, the best tool is one that fits your workflow. Outline programs, mood boards, and even spreadsheets can be invaluable.

How do I keep track of all my world's details?

Organization is key! Create a consistent system for cataloging your information, whether it's a digital wiki, a series of binders, or dedicated worldbuilding software. Regular review and updates will keep your lore consistent.

Can magic systems be too powerful?

A magic system's "power" is less important than its rules and limitations. A well-defined magic system, even a very strong one, feels more balanced if its costs, weaknesses, and societal impacts are clearly established.

How do I join the community discussions?

I don't have a community yet... but you can subscribe to my email list to receive invitations to special events. I also encourage interaction in the comments section of my blog posts and at the bottom of this page!
